Natural Ways to Help Manage Your Depression: Get up and Get Moving

Natural Ways to Help Manage Your Depression: Get up and Get Moving as I have just stated above, the idea of getting out of bed can be extremely problematic for sufferers of depression as they often feel so low and despondent that it seems so much simpler to just stay in bed or on the couch and do truly little.

Having been through that myself and realizing the importance of movement to help treat the condition, I made what was a huge effort and started walking.

Just around the house, very slowly for a couple of weeks, and then, up and down the path in the back garden, before slowly making my way along the street.

I won’t deny that it was difficult and exhausting and that I felt like giving up and crawling back into bed many, many times, but I persisted and believe me, it was a huge help.

By walking, and then later, if possible, running, power walking or joining a gym, you are stimulating the pleasure centers in your brain which, in turn, releases ‘feel good hormones’ (endorphins) into your body, helping to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Even people confined to wheelchairs benefit from this by starting with gentle upper body workouts and progressing to more difficult feats later.

The trick for everyone is simply to start with simple, easy exercise and movement and gently escalate it from there until you are exercising regularly.

There is no need to try and do too much at once. If you do that you will end up being exhausted and feel defeated.

Slow and steady wins the race and you will start to feel better within a very short time, but you must keep it going.
